It’s May the 5th again. We all know what happens on this day!
Time for some guacamole, margaritas, tortilla, mariachis and other things Mexican. It’s the day that we commemorate the victory of the outnumbered Mexican army to the invincible French army on May 5, 1862 (That’s why it’s called Cinco de Mayo).
Let me give you some awesome facts about this fun-filled event that you probably never heard of.
Cinco de Mayo Facts
The Holiday is celebrated in Mexico as El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (The Day of the Battle of Puebla). Celebrated with some reenactment of the event and political speeches rather than the American way of binge drinking margaritas.
You’re probably one of those who believes this misconception, until now of course. Cinco de Mayo is NOT the Mexican Independence Day. Their Independence Day is on the 16th of September.
This event is celebrate more in the USA than in Mexico. It’s just a minor event in Mexico.
Los Angeles boasts the largest Cinco de Mayo Festival in the United States. This state has the highest concentration of Mexican residents in the whole country. (That explains why..)
Yes, the Mexicans won the battle. But not the war. The region was still occupied by the French for five years.
Holy guacamole! The Americans alone consume about 81 million pounds, that’s right, 81 million pounds of Avocado in the Cinco de Mayo festival alone. That’s according to the Official California Avocado site so if you don’t believe me, you can go ahead and check it out yourself!
If the battle was lost, we will probably see a different America today. Napoleon III planned on transforming Mexico as a support base for the Confederate Army in the US Civil War.
