We all loved astronomy as a kid.

We went to planetariums on our field trips and saw the beauty of the skies that is not visible to our naked eyes.

It just simply astounds me.

How majestic the universe is and it’s still continues to expand.

Okay Buzz Aldrin! Here are some amazing facts about the universe, galaxies and stars that you wish that you already known before.

Amazing Facts About Galaxies, Stars and the Universe

Why Is It Called “The Milky Way”?

As a kid, when I heard that the galaxy our solar system is in is called “The Milky Way”, I thought it has something to do with that lactic stuff. But the truth is, it really is related!

The word galaxy came from an ancient Greek word that pertains to “milky”. Yes. What cows release on their udders. That milk.

So, you got it right all the time when your Science teacher asks you about what our galaxy is named after.

Our Friendly Neighbor

We needed the great Edwin Hubble to discover that the Milky Way Galaxy is not the only one in the Universe. In fact, there are countless galaxies out there. The constellation Virgo itself has about 100 galaxies. It’s 110 million light-years from end to end.

With a weak telescope, you cannot see those galaxies. But our nearest neighbor, the Andromeda Galaxy, is quite visible to us. Even with a naked eye.

It’s the farthest object that you can see with a naked eye. But you need a telescope to appreciate its beauty.

Fun Fact: Scientists expects that about 4.5 billion years from now, The Milky Way and the Andromeda will collide to each other. It’s approaching our galaxy with a speed of 100 to 140 kilometers per second.

What a way to go folks!

What’s the Biggest Star Ever Discovered?

That title goes to the gigantic UY Scuti, located about 9,500 light years away from us.

Currently standing at 1,708 ± 192 Solar radii (somewhere between 1,054,378,000 and 1,321,450,000 miles in size). Enough to engulf our entire solar system.

The Earth is Flat?!

Oh yes. We forget about this stuff. Not necessarily connected to our galaxies, but what the heck.

Is the Earth flat? The answer is a big NO.

There are thousands of scientific findings to back it up. Even Erathosthenes back in the days of yore already thought that our planet is spherical shaped of some kind.

If you are believing this fallacy, let me ask you just one thing.

How can our planet be flat, when everyone else is freaking spherical?

Just let that sink in for a moment.

The Moon is spherical, the Sun is spherical, the Asteroids are somewhat spherical, the other planets are spherical.

Looks like the Earth is the only plate-shaped planet that we know of.
