The color gray is attributed with neutrality, calmness and stability. It’s the color of compromise because it is a by-product of mixing two non-colors, black and white.

Being a neutral color, most of the artists and designers choose this color as their main background. Mainly, to make everything else stand out.

There are still a lot of things to discuss about this color’s symbolism, which is what we are going to do today. So, without further ado.

Here are some interesting facts about the color gray.

Interesting Facts About Gray

Forget About The Movie “50 Shades of Grey”

50 shades of gray

It all came to us that humans can see 50 shades of this color when this raunchy BDSM themed flick hit the cinemas. But forget all about that nonsense.

Humans can just distinguish about 30 shades of gray. Depending on the vision, lighting and other factors.

Gray is Forgettable

As I have said previously, this color is often used by designers as a backdrop to make everything else standout.

If you have some troubles remembering some parts of a black and white movie, it’s not your fault.

Black and white (Grayscaled) images and scenes are the most forgettable ones because their colored counterparts connect with the part of the brain the deals with memory functions.

The Gray Friars

Back in the middle ages, priests and friars often wore gray robes because it signifies humility and their vow to poverty. Saint Francis is usually depicted in paintings wearing a gray robe.

It’s also the color attributed to the Lent.

I never knew that gray was a holy color, until now.

Grays Vs. Blues

Confederate Uniform

We all know what happened in the historic American Civil War. It was one of the most deadliest conflicts in history, resulting with the freedom of 80,000+ slaves.

It’s the battle between the Confederate Army (which wore gray) led by General Robert Lee and the Union Army (blue) led by General Ulysses Grant.

Why did they wore blue and gray? It’s because that these colors doesn’t make them stand out from a distance. Kinda like a camouflage that our military wears today.

But in the latter parts of the war, the Confederate states just wore the uniforms of their fallen enemies because of the shortage of gray clothing.
