As a kid, your mom probably bought you a Gameboy as a Christmas present or a birthday present.
This portable gaming console is one of the most iconic symbol of the 90’s, hands down.
Then Nintendo released a game in the late 90’s that will carry their name up to this day.
That game is Pokemon.
Yes, Mario is still the main star of the Nintendo brand, but without these creatures, we are pretty sure that Nintendo wouldn’t be as powerful and famous as we know it today.
Every release of this game made me sleepless until I get it.
Red, Blue, Yellow, Silver, Gold, Crystal, Emerald, Ruby. Name it! All the colors of the rainbow and precious gemstones, we caught them all.
So, why is this game so good? Here’s my take.
Why We All Loved Pokemon
Back in the days (we’re getting old, you know?), the hardware capabilities of the home and portable consoles are limited.
It all came down to bits. The Sega Genesis and Nintendo NES are the two kings of the Golden Days of Gaming in my opinion.
“Sega does what Ninten-dont.”
Remember that commercial? Yeah, me too. They can slander and trashtalk their rivals back in the 80’s and 90’s. Good days.
Then it went to the portable games. The match up now is the Nintendo Gameboy and the Sega Game Gear.
Frankly, I haven’t tried many games in the Sega Game Gear library so, I can’t really tell who had the edge.
But one thing’s for sure. Super Mario and Pokemon ruled the scene.
Every kid was dying to own every Pokemon version release. Pokemon wallpapers are found on every bedroom.
Without this games, we are probably playing our new gen Sega Game Gear today.
But why did we loved this freaking game?
Gameplay Over Aesthetics
As I have said before, the hardware capabilities is limited during those days.
So, the game developers needed to create a game that will fully utilize those capabilities.
Pokemon games’ graphics is not that great, far from it. But the gameplay was so cool.
Being an RPG lover, this game gave me all that I was looking for.
I bought a ton of AA batteries just to finish the game. The replayability is over the top.
You can’t just finish the game with just Charizard, right?
As a kid, it will teach you how to think of strategies on how to beat your opponents not unlike the other games back then.
The Movie and the Anime
I think this is one of the main reasons why Pokemon is so famous today.
The kids in the 90’s watched these animated movies and they loved it. Probably.
The storyline is good enough to keep you glued to your TV sets.
Then another game franchise decided to create their own animated series, Digimon.
Some kids may even tease you when you watch the other one.
“You watch a cartoon that turns an animal into sh*t (Sukamon) when it’s not taken care of? Silly you!”
If you had the Game Link Cable, you and your buddies probably played 1v1 everyday.
It’s a little pricey for an addon. But it’s really worth every penny.
Some Pokemon evolves only when traded. (Kadabra, Haunter, Graveler are some examples)
After trading, it’s time for that competitive gaming!
“I’ll beat your entire team with my one Rattata!”
A good way to chill with your friends on a weekend.
Random Pokemon Facts
- Arcanine was supposed to be a Legendary Pokemon in the first release of the game, but they trashed the idea. Then they probably thought that the game should have a fire legendary dog, then they created Entei.
- Gengar is actually Clefable’s shadow. Guess the game developers ran out of ideas.
- Magikarp is the most useless Pokemon when caught in the wild (even when IV bred), it’s all because of its trademark move, Splash. Then it turns into the one of the most powerful non-legendary Pokemon, Gyarados.
- TM’s can really be helpful with your journey. Your Pokemon can learn Flamethrower, Earthquake or other strong moves. But there is a Pokemon that can’t learn any moves via TM’s. That Pokemon is Wobbuffet.
- Ash Ketchum have met every legendary Pokemon there is except one, Raikou.
- Psyduck is NOT a Psychic Pokemon. Nice logic there Gamefreak!
